Hello fellow basset lovers,
My name is Chris and my wife is Rhonda, we just lost our lovable basset Sydnee to Kidney failure, but we loved him very much. We were just happy as can be to find this page to fill our void. The howling of "Rusty" was wonderful. Sydnee would howl at everything, including his food. He would not eat until he tipped over his bowl and howled at it for 10 minutes.
Thank you all for your stories, they bring back wonderful memories.

P.S. Ever heard of Forest Lodge on the Rapid River, in Maine?
Hi! We have a 5 year old named Dudley. He is our pride and joy. When not chasing after squirrels (he has never, ever caught one!), or howling at the mail man, Dudley can be found curled up in a ball enjoying the comforts of the couch, rug, pillow, floor, towel...well you get the idea...if it doesn't move Dudley could be laying on it.
Dudley is a tri color beauty, with very long ears. He is mostly black and tan with white socks and naturally the tip of his tail, is white too!
We are very excited to have found your page. Dudley is pretty excited too, as he likes to surf the 'net and meet and greet others of the breed.
Best of luck and keep up the great work.

Hi! This is Judy, not Don. We have what we hope qualifies for this page, since "Punkin" is half Basset Hound and Half Beagle! We adopted her when she was five weeks old and the old farmer who owned her was going to drown her! She is four years old now and a beutiful tri-color. She has the body of a Basset and the head of a beagle.
She is quite unique, we think. She has the absolute worst bark you ever heard ( much worse than "Rusty's howl!) But she only barks when someone strange comes to the door, and that is fine. She's a great watchdog. She is extremely loving, and loves to eat and sleep and eat and sleep (you get the picture!).
A year and a half ago, we introduced her to our newest dog, Ginger, who is a full bred black and tan beagle, and was another dog slated for the farmer's pond. They get along fine, unless Ginger happens to try for Punkin's food, and then Punkin' only voices her disapproval and never gets physical with her.
I am sold on both of these breeds, and, by the way, if Basset Hounds aren't supposed to be smart, why does Punkin' run behind the sofa and hide every time I pick up her medicine bottle? Love this page. Keep up the good work for us dog lovers in cyberspace!
I fell in love with the Basset Hound breed about 15 years ago, and am currently allowed to live with my second Basset - Miss Whisper. I have written a poem which I hope you will like.
Have you ever been
Bawled out by a Basset?
Hounded from here
To the town of Cohassett?
"Walk me and feed me
And give me no trouble,
Or I'll bay when you're gone,
Turn your slippers to rubble!"
"The neighbors will hate you,
They'll think that you beat me,
While I look so cute
And I act so sweetly."
"And don't leave me here
All alone on the mat,
Sitting and chewing
That dumb, fat old cat."
She sniffs and she wanders
When we go for long walks
When it's time to return
She tugs and she balks.
She barks at her toy
Then forgets where she hid it.
She expects me to play
Every hour, every minute.
Yes I have been
Bawled out by my Basset
But she'll always be
My very best asset!
(It's kind of silly, I know, but she really does inspire that characteristic)
I just added my hound Dexter to the Net. He can be viewed at:

I am a lonesome Kansan basset (two of 'em) owner now attending graduate school in New York--Troy, to be exact. I had this seemingly awful project of designing a web page for a computer course. Of course, I wanted to include Singer and Joanie in my bio, and thought some basset links might be fun.
Thanks to all of you who contributed pictures, etc. I've been chuckling for an hour, feeling much less homesick for my howlin' twosome and the Beta human in our pack. (He may be alpha now that he's filling the supper dish!) Special thanks to Chris Tracker (I hope I got the name right) for his story, "Corwin and the Truck." If anyone has missed this wonder website, do visit it and read Corwin's version of a McDonald's testimonial. He makes Ronald look like a mortician for getting laughs.
My web page will be out in a couple weeks, though if the undergrads don't quit overloading the circuits with folks dropping in to see their naked pictures, I don't know whether our homepages will be available for public consumption. I hope to include a picture of my two basset beauties to share with the rest of you.
For the love of a good dog,
Donna Phillips

Hi! Thanks for putting out such a great page!! My three year old Basset named Spike is my light and my life. His favourite thing to do besides eating is sleeping. But you already knew that I'm sure! Well, one unique thing about Spike is the way he likes to bark at the dustbuster vacuum cleaner. He even sort of chases it, well, ambles after it. Another fave pasttime is looking so cute that it is distracting to the rest of the family.
Good luck to all you other people owned by Bassets out there!

We have two female bassets (siblings) with rather unique names. They're named after a castle in Scotland: Eilean Donan Castle. Their grandfather was "J.R."

This note comes not from Mark Wauters, from whose server I send this note from. My name is Aart Goossens, law student, living in Belgium and Basset artésien normand-freak since my early childhood.
Unfortunately my first dog, James, doesn't live anymore. He died of a typical "disease" for all long-spine dogs, Discus Hernia. The poor thing only lived for 6 years, but what beautiful years they were.
Our newest friend is Arthur, a tricolor male Basset artésien normand of 1 year Like all dogs of this kind, he is the sweetest en most gentle dog you can ever imagine, but stubborn, unbelievable. But then again so is his owner.
I'd love to write you more about my fabulous adventures with Arthur and James, but time runs out for me now, so it will be for a next time.
By the way, very good idea, this page for basset-lovers.
Greetings and whraouf,
Aart Goossens
Just wanted to drop you a note to tell how much we enjoyed this page!
My husband and I have two bassets (Emily and Tess) - sisters from the same litter. What can I say, we treasure these dogs. They are 7 1/2 years and still are babies. Thanks for your work on this page. I hope you realize that it was appreciated!
Sincerely,
Carol Smithers
While my husband and I were living in Germany, we bought our basset, Bailey. He just celebrated his sixth birthday on Halloween (very appropriate for his personality!) He's our best friend and I could never imagine life without him.
The information we have found on the internet on bassets is fantastic. We never knew there were so many basset lovers out there. We talk about Bailey as if he were our child and many people don't understand. Now, hopefully, we've encountered many who feel the same.
We have two questions concerning bassets and would love to hear from owners. First, Bailey has a skin irritation under his chin. We wash, clean and bring him to the vet, but nothing seems to help. Any suggestions? We're also thinking about adding another dog to the family. Bailey loves other dogs and we think it would be good for him. We'd like to hear from anyone who's had experiences bringing two bassets together.
Thanks.

Just wanted to let you know how happy I was to see the Basset page on my first trip through the WWW. I have a four year old tri-color named Droopy Drawers. Droopy is the best and your typical basset -- a couch potato, a total chow hound, and stubborn as they come (there is no such thing as taking Droopy for a walk -- she definitely takes me for a stroll -- and definitely at her sniff sniff sniff sniff pace).
We have an 8 month old daughter and Droopy is pretty jealous since she's used to being the top banana at my house; but, thankfully, she has been very gentle with the baby and my daughter absolutely loves Droopy and laughs every time she howls, rolls over or (her favorite) when she shakes her head and dewlap.
Thanks again for sharing this home page with fellow Bassett fanatics.

We just played your "howl" file to our Beagle (Eddie). What a hoot! He loved it. Thanks for a good yuk.
Hi! My name is Nina and I have a beautiful red and white Basset named Madeline Grace. My whole family is nuts about basset hounds. We have has three over the past 25 years. As of now, Madeline lives in upstate NY with my parents. She is is 8 years old and just as perfect as ever! Maddie's favorite activities include eating cheese, sleeping, eating biscuits, sleeping, going for car rides, sleeping and sleeping. I could never own another breed of dog. Luckily I have been able to convice my boyfriend that there is nothing better than a basset hound! We can't wait to get our own! Love to hear more basset stories!

We are proud owners of two year-old "Otto." Recently we saw a survey that ranked 79 breeds of dogs in terms of intelligence -- basset hounds ranked 71st. What they lack in brains, they make up for in floppiness!
My name is Cathy and I have two bassets. One is 10 months and the others age is unknown. She was found wandering the streets, in the projects. I love bassets dearly, and I am so glad that I found the den. I am new to the web, and I hope I can find it again. I was wondering what type of basset is your favorite. I forget the spelling, but I have never heard of that type before. I think it was normand or something.
Anyway, did anyone that visits the den go to the basset hound nationals in Anderson Indiana? It was so much fun seeing those short creatures leap over short fences. What a hoot. Thanks again for the site. P.S. Chloe is 10 months and Lilly Serina is we think between 5 and 8 years.
According to Simon and Schuster's Guide to Dogs the Basset, Artésien Normand is a breed that covers two very similar versions of Basset. The Artésien from Flanders and the Normand from Artois. This type of Basset is noted for a smaller head and shorter ears and dewlap. The "English" Basset is more "droopy" and is described as being less frisky than the Artésien.
