Glad to see you here. Logo Bassets were pround to see our breed well loved on the net.
I was just cruising the net and discovered the Basset Page. My two are Portly Audrey Marauder and Sir Charles Barkley. Audrey is 2 1/2 years old and Charlie is 3 months old. They would love to chat with other of their ilk.
We own Jake, a 3 year old, 70 pound (not fat!) red and white Basset. Jake loves to climb (particularly on the kitchen table and counter) and his favorite food is wonder bread he has stolen from the counter! Jake is very skilled at moving the kitchen chairs so he can make his ascent. When not climbing where he doesn't belong, he spends his days sleeping on the back of the couch where he can see out the window without too much effort or playing with his best friend Fu-Fu, a miniature American Eskimo. He is the BOSS in this family!
Enjoyed visiting your home page. I have a three year old tri-color named Beauregard, called Mr. Beau for short. He is the joy of our life, our third! We'll visit again soon.
Thanks
star the wonder basset thinks that the is the coolest page that she's found yet, and she sends out a long sad howl to all her basset buds on the web
I've been chatting with Martha Vaughn about our basset hounds and I've lost her address. Could you send it to me again.
To all basset lovers;
I became addicted to basset hounds the same way most are; I saw a basset puppy and fell hook, line, and sinker. We have Georgia a five year old runt of the litter. She only weighs 36 lbs. She is lemon and white and very small. She is the most timid dog i've ever seen. She had pnuemonia when we got her and we nearly lost her. The vet said we should be prepared that Georgia might not make it. Georgia is a fighter and has been healthy ever since.
Georgia greats us at the door with her baby in her mouth( her stuffed baby), and cries for 15 minutes. Whenever she is happy she grabs her baby. When people visit us she hides under tables and runs from them, barking like they were monsters or something. A lot of people don't understand her and they are afraid of her. A basset hound? Georgia has never been mean, and does not bite. She only will come to people she has known for a very long time.
One day, when we moved into our new house that we rent, our landlord sent over 2 repairmen while we were not home. They got one look and mean dog Georgia and started to chase her into the garage. They litteraly scared the do-do right out of her. I came home and found do-do everywhere, even sprayed on the walls. Poor georgia was locked in the garage shaking. I have never been so mad in my whole life. The moral of the story is; LOOK OUT FOR SPRAYING BASSETS!!
Howdy from Lawrence, Ks. Just wanted to let you know that I recently found your home page on the Web & am enjoying it. My wife & I recently adopted a male basset from the animal shelter here and are becoming very fond of him.
I have a 6 yr old basset. her name is Lady Abigail Murrfy she has had 3 litters of puppies and her husband did in november about 2-3 yrs ago BYE!!!!!!!!
We just acquired George, a three year old neutered basset hound. He is a very lovable dog, but does not want to stay outside; he thinks he belongs inside. What can I do about that? He will howl if we make him stay out. He loves our very young grandchildren, and will lick their faces off. However, he growls at my 26 yr old son for no reason at all. Why would he do this? We are afraid he may bite if kept in the same room with my son.
Is this a matter of concern or will George outgrow it?
I love George, but he has a few traits that are hard to accept after having two dachshunds for 13 and 15 years. Any assistance or advice is appreciated.

We would love to add our basset page to your "Dogue's Gallery." The "Dino the Basset Hound" page, which was just set up several weeks ago, is devoted to our Basset Hound, Dino Bigfoot. The URL is http://www.clark.net/pub/truffaut/dino.html. If you would like a picture of Dino for a thumbnail like the other entries in the Gallery, just let us know.20
Thanks,

We adopted our Basset, Maggie, from Clover Hill Basset in Maine, six years ago and I am still smitten with Maggie. Last year, she found five young kittens in our rock garden and after momma cat came back, the runt was abandoned. Maggie went out and found the runt (now named Wilbur) and mothered him. The other cat doesn't like the dog but Maggie's adopted cat, loves Maggie and plays with her.
Maggie is alomost eleven and is slowing down but gets that occassional burst of energy (lasts for 45 seconds and then back to sleep!).
Hi, My name is Miriam Dalfen and I'm a breeder from Ottawa, Canada and I have a question for other breeders out there. The official position of the Canadian Basset Hound club is that basset hounds are generally healthy. I would like to know what, if any, genetic diseases I should be testing for and how these tests are done. By the way, does anyone out there have Bassets blue de Gascogne?
I have 4 bassets. And 3 teenagers. Plus go to college full time. keeps me busy. My dogs had their portrait made in january. they bring such joy to our home. GeBeau is my favorite and I know she understands everything i tell her. She expresses emotion with every look , sigh, or bark. I wish everyone could enjoy this kind of love.
Hi! I was just wondering if you had any advice for us. We have a male basset who is about four years old which we adopted four months ago. He is absolutely perfect except for 1) he has bitten two children and 2) he doesn't like most other dogs(unless they are bassets). Have you ever seen this behavior before in a basset and do you have any suggestions? Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated!
I am desperate for help! My 8 year-old basset, Sam, is scared of our new furnace which was installed last week. When the furnace kicks on she (Sam) starts to pant, drool, and pace the floor. She also must be physcially touching someone if at all possible. If not, she starts to cry and bark, and cannot be consoled.
The vet's solution was to give her tranquilizers, which I can tell after one day is NOT the answer. Please let me hear from you if you can think of anything that I should try. We are close to the end of furnace season but we can't go an entire Iowa summer without using the air-conditioner at least a few times.

We were just curious if you'd received any help about Sam's problem with the furnace.
Has he adjusted?

Thanks for the concern about Sam. We called the vet and she suggested tranquilizers. Poor Sammy was a doped up dog for 2 1/2 days on 1 1/2 days worth of pills! They didn't seem to help make her any less scared of the furnace, she just had a slower reaction to it.
She wouldn't let us sleep at night due to her constant barking and when we let her in the bedroom she would pace and pant around the bed in circles. I finally let her get in bed and voila -- problem solved within two days! She hasn't been scared of the furnace since. Now the next step is to wean her out of the bed, that could take awhile!!
I was wondering if you would consider adding the new web page of the Maryland, D.C and Virginia Basset Rescue League to your page?

Thanks for your consideration,

Dear Head Basset,
I currently have "Sophie" (The Sopher, Soph, Sophia). She's 6 years old, a beautifully marked tri-color, and a very big girl at 65 lbs. (Not fat, just BIG!) And what a sweetie! She's convinced that the chipmunks who have inhabited our patio are trying to take over the world, although she's much more content to visualize her conquests in her own imagination rather than actually enact them in real life. To her, the very best thing in life (other than rawhide) is draping herself across my lap to watch t.v. in the evenings. Well, I watch; she snores! Soph's a talker, too. We have nightly conversations in "howl-ese".
Sophie had some experience in the ring as a youngster. She was doing very well, except for occasionally (and unpredictably) rolling over on her back when the judges would talk to her. Then she would start "singing" to them, upside down, with her tail wagging! As I'm sure you all know, trying to make a Basset right themselves when they don't want to be upright is nearly impossible; kind of like trying to pick up mercury. She would "go boneless" and continue her seranade. Of course, this wasn't acceptable ring behavior, but I saw the crustiest of curmudgeons break into a smile and chuckle the last time she did this. Her career ended, but at least she made a happy impression.
Sophie is the Canine Earth Mother of the neighborhood. Puppies are just naturally drawn to her and she adores them as if they were her own. She considers the mailman and the Domino's Pizza delivery guy to be something close to gods, and her best doggie friend is a 10-year old Golden Retriever named "Buck". He has a somewhat different interpretation of their relationship, but Soph seems devoted nonetheless. I believe the term "social butterfly" was coined with Miss Sophie in mind.
I can always count on her to be at the sliding-glass door when I come home from work, sometimes stretching, always wagging that white-tipped tail like a flag. Even if I'm delayed for one of a thousand reasons, she still greets me with a heart just bursting with love. I have to admit that each time I see her, mine does the same . . .
My mother has a 7 year old basset male. He has a nagging problem with his feet. The pads on his feet swell and the area between his toe nails gets raw. He constantly licks it. He get so bad he does not want to walk. The vet has been little help. We tried something called bitter apple to quit the licking but he just licks if off. He gets better for a short time and then back to the same old thing.
I am interested in anyone having the same problem and any treatments.
Thanks

Mike is my third basset hound, following Freddie I and Freddie II who did not live long lives. Mike was chosen by my daughter, Kristen Hatch, who was killled in 1990 by a drunken driver, and, of course, her dog "Mike" is very important to me and I try to give him the best of care. Mike has been through a lot since his mistress's death, he misses her and we have had to move him twice since Kristen was killed.
Mike will be 13 years old on April 15 and seems to be going strong. He has a bad heart (the vets say a bad heart murmur -- two years ago they said he would not live long). However, Mike is now living in sunny Florida and seems to be thriving. I am told Bassets have a relatively short life span and I am interested in hearing from anyone who has or had a Basset that live an extraordinary long life.
Dear Head Basset (Woof)!
Over a year ago, we adopted Angel, a beautiful rust and white girl, from the basset rescue society. She weighed only 28 lbs when we got her, and now she is a plush and happy lady who weighs in somewhere around 55 lbs. or more. Before Angel, we shared our lives with sweet Winifred, a black and white elegant socialite who was given to us by a dear friend when she was about 9 years old. We loved her dearly until she died at age 12.
How can one devote full time to bassets and make a living? I would gladly give up my job as a surgical nurse and stay home raising bassets. Is there anyone out there who has done this? Share your ideas with me, if you would.
There is nothing more rewarding than to care for a trusting basset!
Yours truly, Nancy, the Hound Lady
My name is Sarah Whitcomb I have a basset hound named Hannah. Basset hounds are the most wonderful dog breed out there. I play the violin and my sister plays the piano. Hannah enjoys acomanying us when ever possible. Her favorite note seems to be G and she prefers songs in minor keys to those in major. We have a home page and hope to be adding a picture of our most adorable dog shortly.
See ya later felow basset hound lover!!
Just wanted to drop a note and say thanks for a great web page. It's amazing how silly basset owners (including us) can be about their dogs, but they are without a doubt the most lovable and loving breed around. We have two: Dudley-a 2 1/2 year old 52 lb. male and Maude-a large 65 lb. 4 year old female. Dudley came from a show-dog breeder, but had some cosmetic defects, like an overbite and epidermal occlusion cysts that prevented him from being a show dog. He is tremendously outgoing and has never met a stranger. Maude, on the other hand, is very shy and somewhat skittish around stranger. This came on before we got Dudley and she is beginning to become more socialized.
Does anyone out there have any ideas about speeding up this process? Dudley just has surgery to remove four cysts on his head. The sight of a basset with a shaved head, two six inch stiched incisions, and an overbite is not a pretty one. However, he thinks "homely" is a good word.
Keep up the great work on the basset page.
WE ARE OWNED BY A BASSET HOUND IN BOTHELL, WASHINGTON...HELP! WHAT CAN WE DO TO GAIN CONTROL OF OUR LIVES AGAIN? WE ARE STARTING A TRAINING PROGRAM THIS WEEKEND (COMMAND PERFORMANCE FROM AN INFO-MERCIAL) - WISH US LUCK....

Please let us know.

We have a new member of our family...Dudley the basset hound. He is 3 1/2 months old and already weighs 26 pounds. Is this abnormally big??? Not that it matters really, because he is just the cutest, silliest little guy I have ever seen. My husband and I have fallen in love with the breed. They are such clowns!
Dear Basset Lover,
I too am one of you!!!!!!!!!
I currently have five bassets, ages 5 through 13, two of them are rescues that had medical and or behavioral problems that I just couldn't saddle adoptive families with.
I have been doing Basset Hound Rescue here in Riverside County now for two years and in that time have placed 14 bassets in loving homes.
Just two weeks ago my youngest, Ellie Mae, gave birth to ten beautiful Basset puppies. They are a delight!!!
Just a few questions..... Is that a normal size litter for bassets? My other older female had two litters in her lifetime and had 7 the first time and 8 the second.
P.S. I love the page and will post pictures of the babies and my own basset family after I have the photos scanned at Kinkos.
P.P.S. Their names are Cleo (hasn't everyone had one named that!), Bruce, Madeline, Woody and Ellie Mae. Ellie's pups are: Petunia, Humphrey, Sebastian, Lillian, Lucy, Quincy, Cleo, Gaylord, Beauregard and Clementine.
We live in Palm Springs, CA.
Hello to all you Basset lovers! We have a six year female, Daphne, who fits the basset profile perfectly: smart, eats everything in sight, sleeps best on the sofa during the day and in bed with us (burrowed under the covers, of course) at night. She is a spoiled pet and we can't imagine her any other way! Just a note to let you know of the Bassett Bash on March 31 in Woodinville, WA (a suburb of Seattle). It is an annual event with a Basset brigade parade and an afternoon of fun and games: (best howl, best wiggle, the hot dog race, best trick etc.) It truly is the most fun afternoon. Oh, and there is a prize for coming the farthest distance. One year there was a visiting Basset from England. So you Basset lovers, come on out to Woodinville and join the fun!
greetings from Prairie Village Kansas the home of Dudley and Penelope and a couple of two legged beasts that are much too active for us.
Glad to see we have such a neat page here. Ever since we ran-off that whinning little mut Toto, life's been boring. But now we can surf the net while those caretakers of ours are gone. We're both 3 and Dudley (a pig of a hound if I ever saw one 90#) is sleeping as usual. Gotta stroll I see a pillow in need of a good drool. Just wish these keys were a bit larger.
Penelope
I discovered you site on Sat Feb 3 the day after I had to put down my buddy ZAC he was a great dog and we had him for 3 wonderful years. Since that day we found a breader in Weedsport NY and one month from today we get to bring home a new puppy we are like expecting parents we are counting the days we even have a name picked out RUDY. We will keep you all informed on RUDY"s progress if he brings us half as much joy as ZAC it will be great

I think I saw a letter regarding trying to find a Basset print or an artist name for Basset artwork. Over 10 years ago I purchased a print at an Actors and Others for Animals shindig at the Burbank studios in California. The artist's name appears to be Carol Pajafia. Maybe someone from the Basset Hound Club of Southern California can provide more information. Hope this helps!
We just got a puppy for Christmas. Her name is Maddison. If anyone has any tips on how we can get her to go to the washroom outside they would be welcomed.
Dudley and Penelope are stretched out across the bed watchning me surf and occasionally raising an eyebrow at all the hounds that keep popping up on the monitor. What a terrific site!!!! Dudley & Penny are both 3 yrs old and although identical in markings they are both rescues from different litters. The Dud weighs 95+ lbs even though he only eats 2 cups of food a day. The vet (3 actually) have assured me he is not fat just a genetic moose with long ears. He sure gets plenty of exercise (45+min walks) and few treats. Maybe if I could get the remote away from him and talk my wife into letting me toss his Lazy Boy it would help. Penny, well she's just the queen of the house and a petite 45lbs.
The hounds are looking forward to Dog n' Jog on mothers day when they'll gather with about 1000 other dogs to raise money for the Greater Kansas City Humane Society. We always pack the hounds and last year had 31 bassets in a group. Of course a basset must finish last. If anyone ever meets a basset named Fred from Souix City by way of prairie village ks. have him drop dudley a line. Fred moved away last year and the Dudster has been heart broken. Even over a year later he still lunges for Fred's old gate when we walk by. Sorry no pix to post but i'm not that advanced. I'm still trying to figure out how to teach a male Basset to lift a leg like the rest of the dogs.
keep up the great site.
We have only one Basset Hound her name is Emily. She 6 years old and a joy. She is the most obedient dog I have every owned. We were surprised at how well she listens since our Bloodhound never would. However she deeply misses our bloodhound - Hal who died over a year ago and has gotten very attached to me.
We take her to may reenactment events around the MD-VA-PA area much to her disgust. But she loves the attention from the spectators and even had her picture in the Baltimore Sun a few years back. My six year human child loves her to pieces and she is very good with him.
I am so glad I found this page.
