Dear H. B.,
Could you please let me know if you have any information regarding breeders or other sources for Bassets in the Greater Toronto Ontario Canada area?
I'm looking for a good companion and have loved Bassets for many years.
My e-mail address is 'petemca@msn'.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Yours truly,
Peter McAteer
I absolutely loved your own personal basset hound history, It really was touching. I started out in life with german shepherds (Lady Jane) and mixed breeds - all great dogs.
But on graduating from college and starting off in life in 1980, I bought my first basset hound, Donna Louise, from a family of 11 bassets including the parents, Abelard & Eloise, in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Bassets were the dog for me, I had admired them from afar for years. Donna Louise lived until 1993 and the pain of her passing convinced me that I should never have another dog. but I could not stand being bassetless for long, and Lillian came into my life in April of 1994. We are the best of friends and she has convinced me that bassets are the only dogs for me.
Thank you for your great story and your fantastic work on The Basset Den, I would have bought a computer sooner if I had known you were out there!
Sincerely,
Luke J. Homan
We just want to tell you that your program is wonderful We are basset lovers too.
We have had four bassets over the past fifteen years and they are the greatest. We have two bassets now a 22 month old female named Becky Jane and a nine month old Basset named Baxter Fred. Our other two bassets lived to be 10 years old and almost 15 years old.
We also have had cocker spaniels too, We have a 4 year old cocker named Bosley.
Our bassets have personality and a half they are wonderful dogs I cant find a thing that I'd change about them They're a little hardheaded and strubborn but they are the most loving gentle dogs that Ive ever seem . Good luck with your column I'll be checking in often.
I have two bassets, Sherlock and Izzy, and I would like to get in touch with other basset lovers on the internet. Could you send me any email addresses for basset interest groups?
Thank you very much!
Bridgette, Izzy and Sherlock
....from Schuyler, Marlowe and Boswell to Rusty and Bassets 'round the world and to all who love them! May you all have the happiest of holidays....merriest of Christmases and a prosperous and bassetful New Year!

PS--Keep up the good work with the homepage! It's informative, entertaining our favorite 'favorite place'. Hard work and quality always shows! This page is the best!
Thanks for the great Basset pages! Our Hamlet-what-Amlet, otherwise known as Hammy or Hambone, is 75 pounds of smelly, slobbery, lazy, stubborn, wonderful tricolor basset. He is almost 4 years old but thinks he is still a baby. We adopted Sadie, an elderly basset the summer before last but unfortunately she was ill and passed away this Labor Day, so Hammy is an only dog again. I think he prefers it that way. I'm hoping to find another basset that needs a home here in Bakersfield sometime soon, but my family isn't so sure. Anyway, keep me on your list and keep the slobber rag handy!
I am from Canada and I would like to know if there are any Basset Hound rescue organizations in Canada.(Primarily Edmonton Alberta). I used to have a Basset and I miss him dearly.[ie: Latrelle Washington Jefferson Stuart,]

We have had 3 of the world's most wonderful Bassets. Sam was a beautiful 80 lb. red and white with the longest ears and the deepest bark. Sadie was his half sister - tricolor with the sweetest, gentlest disposition. After they passed away, we rescued Madeleine, who we know had a sister named Gladys (does anyone know her?). Madeleine was very complex - very intelligent, a little moody, loved to romp in the woods and chase squirrels, and of course sniff everything. She loved to roll in dead animals and once found a dead bear in the forest. She died sadly of cancer, at only age 7. Sam was the champion drooler of all time, and both Sam and Sadie loved to camp - it took only minutes for them to understand the concept of a tent, and when it was time to go to sleep would walk over to the tent opening and expect to be immediately let in, after which they would spread their warm fat bodies across the better parts of both our sleeping bags. We often would have to sleep in the "remote" corners of the tent to accomodate them. It is wonderful to know there are so many other Bassets out there and people who love them.
Took a brief look at your hounds... they are a fine looking pack. You should see my Harry. A little old, a little blind, a little deaf, but still still a great friend at 13 years.
Dear Head Basset,
It is actually Vivian (Peter's daughter) writing to tell the tale of how we acquired and fell in love with our Basset Hound Rocky Napolean Einstein.
In 1987 we adopted Rocky from friends in Florida who were unable to keep him as they were moving into a condo that forbade dogs.
It was a snowy Valentine's day when Rocky arrived from sunny Florida to frigid, snowy Toronto. My father and I loved him on sight....he was cute and fuzzy (albeit a little shaken from the plane ride and the change of climate). My mother was not crazy about Rocky. She was never fond of dogs and had let me and my dad get a dog because we really wanted one.
Within six weeks my mother liked Rocky more than either of us. He had worn he down with his doggy charms. She tried to ignore him, but constantly, day after day Rocky just kept trying to shower her with affection. She fell in love with him too. By the end of the six weeks she was taking him on car-rides (just around the block) because he liked them so much.
Hope you enjoyed the story,
Vivian
When I was a child living in Sanford, Florida in the mid-60s, we bought McDuff Chester (aka Duffy) who was identified by the none-too-kind breeder as the "runt" of the litter. Duffy had one brown eye and one eye which was actually half brown and half blue (I kid you not.) Since he was a very lovable, but not intelligent-looking, animal, the eye-color thing didn't detract much from his overall attractiveness. (His smell, on the other hand, which he got from mucking around the Florida swamplands, was a different matter.) I was interested to read that there are other bassets with two different colored eyes but, alas, have no further information.
My own bassets, Veronica and Cosette, have beautiful brown eyes, although poor Veronica has a cataract in her left eye.
Georgie is very happy to have found friends on the net. You know, people who understand drool, smell, tripping on your own ears, etc.
Georgie is very emotional and there are a few of our friends she doesn't trust, but she adores children and almost everybody else. She always tells us EXACTLY how she feels, in four octave vocal range. As you can tell, we love her tremendously, and we are happy to know that there are others out there with our "eclectic" taste in pets.

My name is Cindy. I just found this group and I love it! Seven months ago our family became first time Basset owners, quite by accident.
A neighbor with a Mom and six pups experienced a disaster. Infection wiped out all the pups but one at three days old. I volunteered to hand-rear the survivor. It only took a day for me to bond with her.
The neighbor generously gave her to us, disregarding his large stud investment. She wrapped Larry's (my husband) heart around her little paw.
Six months later, the neighbor divorced, moved to an apartment and kept the Mom shut up inside for up to 14 hrs. a day alone. He asked us if we wanted her as well, since the separation from the owner's wife and kids, death of her pups, and continued isolation made her an emotional basket case. We said YES!
With six of us to love her, and the company of her surviving pup, she is thriving. She filled out and chilled out. Socks is now very happy and secure. Daisy, her daughter, is a neverending source of wild energy and silly stunts.
I never, ever imagined us as Basset owners. Now I can't imagine life without them. They are the best! Sorry this letter is so long. I love to talk about our sweethearts.
Bye bye from Socks, Daisy, Cookie(our sheltie), the five cats, three cockatiels, four Kids, Cindy and Larry!
P.S. Great work A.P.! God bless you and your adoption service!
Hi, My name is Dave Sisemore and while being somewhat new to the Internet, I have two adorable Basset Hounds. Kona is a 4 year old Tri-Color and Suzi is about 2 1/2. Both of these were adopted thru the Basset Rescue group here in San Diego. I was wondering if you might add them to the list of Rescue Groups NOT on the Net?

To date this group has rescued and placed over 400 Bassets.
We're Doug and Patty from Missouri,
We have owned three bassets in the past but have been bassetless for the last eight years. Join us in celebrating an end to our 'lonliness'! We just this day purchased a three-month red & white male who is yet nameless. We will bring him home the day before Christmas! We will let you know how it goes, but he already appears to be a classic and seems to enjoy his ownership of us already.
We just discovered your home page and hope it enjoys success!
They are the greatest! I just found your page..we have three bassets: Mugwump, Miles and Ruby--that last two adopted from the animal shelter. We love bassets because they're strong minded but gentle, with an extraordinary character and to say the least an unusual personality. One of us won first prize at a local fun dog show in the Onwer-dog lookalike contest. What an honor. (I'd take more in a minute, but would be disowned)
My Basset "Ture" wants to wish all the Hound Dogs on the Net a merry, merry christmas and a lots of ham ;-)
Thank you for all of the info. My 18 month old male, Newman, had mysterious limps that I now understand. We adopted him at 15 months. He's an only dog and I love him!
Hello from england! we're in the military and three years ago, we came to England. We brought our lovely little chap "claude" with us. As you know England has a quarentine time of six months. which was hell. Two months after claude was released from jail, we bought him a lovely little (well not so little) basset girl, Logan. Another six months later Claude was a proud papa (to another basset) and ofcourse we added yet another basset to the family, his son, Devon. Now we're up to three and haven't learned yet, we're looking at another one from a rescue service. When you get time we would love to hear from you, until then, happy howling!!!!
Lauren and Tim
Thanks for the information on the web. I just purchased my second basset a male tri-color, who I might add is growing like a weed.
Great pictures.
This is the first time I've seen this web site in full color.
I congratulate you.
I have owned four bassets over the last 30 years, so I guess you might say I am hooked on the breed. Also have several anecdotes as well as pictures but at the moment I am not sure how to get the photos to your web site.
Incidentally, there was a good article about a Basset rescuer in Derry NH written up in last Sunday's Boston Globe. I have an ascii copy if you are interested. I do not see her listed among rescuers.
Jerry..
Funky Dog would like to join the web
BARNABY IS MY FIRST BASSET. IN FACT, I ADOPTED HIM JUST THIS MORNING. IN THE PAST FEW HOURS I HAVE SPENT THE LIFE SAVINGS AT THE VET, AND THE PET STORE. HE WAS DIRTY & SMELLED REALLY BAD, SO I PUT THE OTHER DOGS OUT (WE HAVE 2 GREAT DANES) & PUT BARNABY IN THE BATHTUB. NOW HE IS CLEAN & SHINES LIKE A NEW PENNY.(SMELLS GOOD TOO.) BARNABY HAS THE BEST DISPOSITION OF ANY ADULT DOG I'VE EVER ACQUIRED. IT'S HARD TO IMAGINE THAT SOMEONE THREW HIM OUT OF A CAR, & HE'S BEEN ADOPTED OUT BEFORE.(I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY TIMES.) ASIDE FROM HIS INCESSANT BARKING,(HE'S A LONG WINDED TALKER.) HE'S JUST ABOUT PERFECT. MY 1 YEAR OLD DANE HAS EATEN FURNITURE,WALLS,SHOES, & NUMEROUS OTHER VALUABLE ITEMS, I THINK IF HE HAS ANY BAD HABITS, THEY CAN'T BE ANY WORSE THAN THAT.I'M ENJOYING MY FIRST DAY OF BEING "OWNED" BY A BASSET. BARNABY IS WONDERFUL.
I'LL LET YOU KNOW IF I CHANGE MY MIND.
WHAT A WELL KEPT SECRET! BASSETS!
SINCERELY,
JO LENIGER
my basset cross has two blue eyes. They say the boxer daddy had one blue eye, but 4 out of 8 puppies in the litter had at least one blue eye (Doobie was the only one with both, so he's special!)
I don't know enough about genetics, but that would at least suggest to me that the propensity for blue eyes exsisted in the female. (for there to have been such a high percentage of the puppies to have gotten the blue eyes.
He is a really great dog by the way. Kinda funny looking, very heavy, but with the best personality. We've wondered if he could be deaf, but it might just be selective listening :)

My Basset Hound is just barely 6 months old. I love my basset mostly because of his ears and his personality. He is such a friendly puppy and really puts up alot with my kids. He just lays there and lets them use him like a pillow. It is so cute. His ears are so floppy. It is so funny when he steps on them and falls on his nose and when he gets them all wet when he drinks.
Hi! What a wonderful idea -- the Basset's Den. I love it and I've told all my family and friends about it.
I live with my sister and her husband (both retired but busy, busy, busy all day long) and their two bassets -- Penny, who has her TD and CD and is trying for her TDX. She is a beautiful red and white five-year old; Chumley, a rescue dog who stayed with us (my sister does basset rescue for the Carolinas) and is eight. He is handsome -- has long white hair, eyes hidden under his upper lids and a personality that doesn't quit. He also has red here and there and a fluffy tail. He just loves to howl with anyone who will howl with him! Then there's my Dinah, a Musicl and Best of Breed dog who came to live with us when her mistress could no longer show her (she would not breed so was spayed and taken out of show competition). She is almost eleven and acts four most of the time! She's a tri-color -- mostly black and beautiful.
Because of my sister's involvement with Carolina Basset Hound Rescue, we sometimes have more than our own three bassets housed in our home that is supposed to only have a max of two small dogs!! Tina, my sister, has placed close to twenty dogs in the past year and her co-workers have done just about the same. Most of us couldn't afford to do this sort of thing even if we wanted to. It's sometimes very costly, and of course there is very little money coming back to cover the expenses. Most of the dogs rescued are heart-worm positive, have had no shots and need to be neutered or spayed and because we don't have room to board them, we have to board them at the Vet's or at a kennel until such time as they are adopted. But we love them all.

I need to correct a statement I made in my note that is now posted in the mail bag of the basset's den: I wrote that our Penny had her CD and she doesn't (this is wishful thinking). She does have her TD and is a Good Citizenship Dog, but the other tags we are still hoping for. Dinah has her Good Citizenship also and Chum passed his first class in obedience. Dinah, 10 1/5, Chum 8, Penny is 5. They love each other and us and we love all of them!
My sister has three adoptable bassets to place in homes this week. One, a beautiful mail named Murphy, is going to his new home today. Barney is waiting and so is the little girl who is at the Vet being treated for Kennel Cough and then will have to be spayed. Busy time of the year. My sister does rescue work for Carolina Basset Hound Rescue and is rescuing or placing a dog most every week. JoAnne, Raleigh, NC cotaj@meredith.edu

My wife and I would really love to adopt a bassed hound, but we do not know where to begin. If you have some information that you could send me I would appreciate it

Just found your page and thought I'd drop a line. You can visit http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/bill_bufkin to see Trenna. We adopted her this Feb. Look under the personal bio page for photo.

While surfing this morning I believe I found one of those treasures you read about. Of course one man's treasure is another man's... Anyway we live with a basset, it is foolish to say we own one, because I think it is the other way around. Hope things go well for this site. I have put it in my favorite places and will be back from time to time.

I love your page and will contribute. I live with my sister and brother-in-law and three wonderful, lovable bassets. If you receive this I'll write more. JoAnne Cota, Raleigh, NC
