1. James Stewart (recorded as James Steward in passenger log) came from Scotland to Plymouth, Massachusetts on board the Fortune on November 11, 1621.

(2) I. Daniel Stewart m. Mary Vincent

2. Daniel Stewart- Perhaps brought from Scotland after the Scot Rebellion of 1640. He is first found in Barnstable, Massachusetts in 1662 where he was admitted as an inhabitant. He then moved to Eastham, MA before 1671 and then to Martha's Vineyard before 1680 where he settled in Tisbury and remained for about 4 years. He then moved to Edgartown where he lived until his death in 1703. His will was written Jan. 6, 1702 and was probated Aug. 4, 1703. Benjamin Smith was the executor. Nothing definite is known of wife Mary except that she was living at the date of his will. No record of the family exists except the names of the children which appear in his will.

6. John Stewart- Born in 1670. Resided in Edgartown, was a husband and landholder. Married Margaret Forster, of whom nothing can be found to fix her identity. She survived him and was living in 1754. His will dated Feb. 25, 1735 was probated July 2, 1736, between which date he died.

11. Daniel Stewart- Born in 1711. Resided in Edgartown and was a laborer. Married Jane Vincent who was born in 1715 and died Jan. 1791. She was a daughter of Thomas Vincent and Sarah Martain (probably a daughter of George Martain). Daniel died Nov. 1778. His estate valued at 314 F. was administered by his wife.

17. Hugh Stewart- Born May 5, 1751. Revolutionary War soldier, cabinet-maker and house-joiner. Moved from Edgartown to Farmington in 1794. Died Aug. 3, 1835 at age 84. Married Mary Marchant on about 1778. Mary died Oct. 8, 1846 age 89. Hugh served in the Sea Coast Defense in 1776. They are buried in the cemetery behind the Courthouse in Farmington.

23. Hugh Stewart- Born March 22, 1785 in Martha's Vineyard. Moved to Farmington in 1794 with his father. One of the first settlers of New Vineyard. He built the grist mill and saw mill there in the village in 1798 and sold it to Solomon Luce in 1827. He died March 22, 1840 at age 54. Married Martha (Patty) Luce on Sept. 17, 1807 in Farmington. She was born Sept. 17, 1807 and died March 14, 1841 at age 53. They are both buried in the McLain Cemetery in New Vineyard. Martha (Patty) was daughter of Solomon Luce and Martha Tilton Luce who moved to New Vineyard in 1797. Hugh's house is across the street from the grist mill and in modern times was used to house New Vineyard's fire fighting equipment. He also built the building next to his house which was used as a hotel then later owned by Cecil Carsley and used as a general store.

24. Daniel Stewart- Born Aug. 30, 1786. Lived in North Farmington and worked as a house-joiner and cabinet-maker. Known for his rocking chairs. Married Mrs. Delight Church Coney who died in 1827.

33. Frederic Vassal Stewart- Born Nov. 25, 1806. Entered the store of Nathan Bachelder at Hallowell as a clerk. Learned the mercantile trade. About 1827 worked in Windsor until 1831, then moved to Vienna. Moved back to Farmington became, in 1859, the proprietor of the stage line between Hallowell and Farmington. The largest mail contractor in Maine. Sheriff of Franklin county in 1859.

(63) I. Samual Barrett b. June 9, 1839. Graduated Bowdoin College in 1857 and Harvard Divinity School in 1862. Minister of Unitarian Society, Nashua, New Hampshire in 1862 and Lynn, Massachusetts in 1863.

 

35. John Church Stewart- Born July 30, 1810. Worked as a farmer carpenter and real estate in Farmington. Married Abigail Jones Ridgeway.

41. Daniel W. Stewart- Born in 1809. Died Jan. 16, 1847 age 38. Married Fear McLain Nov. 14, 1848. Daniel was born in Farmington and moved to New Vineyard at age 14. After he died and then his wife the next year, Thomas Parker was appointed guardian of their son Daniel Leroy and daughter Malancy. Malancy died Feb. 28, 1854 at age 16 after living with her uncle Dea. John McLain. In March 1858, Nathaniel Wright signed as guardian of Daniel Leroy.

She died May 25, 1914 at age 87 years 9 months 25 days. Purportedly Samuel and Mary could "commune with spirits."

64. John Elbrige Stewart- Born Feb. 3, 1843. Was in territory of Colorado when gold was discovered in 1858. Joined military and helped force Cheyennes off of their land. Returned to Farmington and lived on Homestead Farm. Purportedly made much money from the gold out west and had it taken from him by a member of Butler family.
