Sobonfu Elizabeth Somé

Sobonfu Elizabeth Somé was born in Dano, Burkina Faso, a remote west African village of about 200 people. As described in The Spirit of Intimacy: Ancient Teachings in the Ways of Relationships., Dano has preserved the old ways of African village life, with family structures, spiritual practices and means of living that have been in place for over ten thousand years.

In Dano, the destiny of each child is foretold before their birth. Sobonfu, it was announced, was born to be a "keeper of the rituals," which is the translation of her name, Sobonfu. She was destined to travel far from home in carrying out her mission, and her early education and initiation prepared her for this path.

Sobonfu's message about the importance of spirit, community and ritual in our lives rings with an intuitive power and truth that Alice Walker has said, "can help us put together so many things that our modern western world has broken." Sobonfu and her spouse, Malidoma Somé, live in Oakland, California and Burkina Faso.
