The Hungry Soul:
A Literary Magazine
BMHC
The soul's fire casts dancing shadows on the soft underbelly of the world, devours the wooden masks of fear which crackle in the heat then rise toward heaven, now a wisp of breath curled around the tongue of God.
What is soul? What is the soul's hunger? Is it longing for a sense of belonging in the world, vitality through experience (whether painful or pleasurable), purpose and meaning in life, or perhaps a quiet stillness in the early morning light? What is the common boundary between art and healing? And how does artistic expression lead us to a direct and immediate experience of the divine? The Hungry Soul, an on-line literary magazine, seeks to explore these questions through poetry, story, essay, imagery, metaphor and the creative imagination. In the true spirit of inquiry we offer these questions, not to be answered, but to open a doorway to the soul's longing. Or as the Sufi mystic Rumi suggests, "This longing you express is the return message." ( The Essential Rumi)
